Fiber Discs vs. Flap Discs
| Fiber Discs | Flap Discs | |
|---|---|---|
| Cutting power | Higher, suited to heavy stock removal | Moderate, balances removal and finishing |
| Feel | Harder | Softer |
| Surface finish | Coarser | Smoother |
| How used | Must be used with a backing pad | Has its own backing plate |
| Typical work | Weld removal, descaling, deburring castings | Post-weld blending, edge dressing |
4 Abrasive Grains
Aluminum oxide
general purpose for carbon steel, good value
Zirconia
heavy grinding of carbon steel and stainless steel, self-sharpening under pressure, long life
Silicon carbide
non-ferrous metals, stone, non-metals
Ceramic
hard-to-grind materials such as stainless steel and high-strength steel, with lower grinding temperature. Its advantage shows only with enough pressure
Always Use a Backing Pad
- Hard backing pad high cutting power, suited to heavy grinding on flat surfaces
- Soft backing pad conforms to curves, suited to light grinding and touch-up
- Ribbed backing pad good heat dissipation, suited to long continuous grinding
- Never use without a backing pad the disc may deform or break
Why Fiber Discs Curl and How to Prevent It
- Keep discs sealed in their original packaging and open it only before use
- Store them flat, not on edge or under heavy weight
- Keep them away from damp areas and heat sources such as radiators
Choosing Fiber Discs by Workpiece
- Carbon steel aluminum oxide or zirconia. Aluminum oxide offers good value, and zirconia lasts longer
- Stainless steel zirconia or ceramic. Ceramic grinds cooler and reduces heat discoloration (bluing) on the workpiece
- High-strength steel, alloy steel ceramic, with enough pressure
- Aluminum, non-ferrous metals, stone silicon carbide, whose sharp grains suit soft materials and non-metals

Rex Production and Inspection
- Automated production resin coating, grain coating and curing, controlling grain distribution and bond strength
- Die cutting controls outer diameter and arbor hole size to fit the backing pad
- Inspection spot checks on dimensions, flatness and appearance
- Stacking and packing discs are stacked flat before packing to reduce deformation in transit
Private Label and
Packaging
- Back printing with brand, model, grit and speed
- Labels, barcodes, multilingual versions
- Bulk cartons, retail boxes, multi-packs
Run a Comparison
Test First
01.
Prepare two identical steel plates and weigh each one
02.
Grind for 5 minutes each with the Rex sample and the disc you use now, on the same angle grinder at the same pressure
03.
Weigh again to see which disc removed more material
04.
Keep grinding until each disc is worn out, and record its total life
Why Rex for Fiber Discs
4 abrasive grains from one supplier
from entry-level aluminum oxide to premium ceramic, covering a complete price ladder
Matched to backing pads
outer diameter and arbor hole are controlled during die cutting so discs fit and run steadily
Flat-stacked packing
reduces deformation in transit and storage
Order with flap discs
the two products are usually stocked together, and Rex can ship them in one consolidated shipment
Products Often Bought with Fiber Discs
Flap Discs
T27 flat and T29 conical flap discs for weld grinding, blending and deburring. 100–180 mm, five abrasive grains, P36–P600.
Strip Discs
Non-woven discs for rust, paint and coating removal, in fiberglass-backed, shaft-mounted, hook and loop, and quick-change versions.
Sanding Belts
Belts in custom widths and lengths, with butt or lap joints, for portable and industrial sanders.
What to Include in Your RFQ
- Diameter, arbor hole and hole type
- Abrasive grain and grit
- Matching backing pad model (state it if you need pads supplied too)
- Packaging method, and whether you need moisture-proof packaging
- Branding requirements and quantity
