T27 or T29
T27 flat
working angle of about 0–15°, wide contact area, suited to blending flat surfaces, edge dressing and finishing
T29 conical
working angle of about 15–25°, concentrated pressure, suited to weld grinding, chamfering and fast stock removal
Where Each of the 5 Abrasive Grains Fits
Aluminum oxide
general purpose for metal and non-metal, with the widest grit range, covering everything from stock removal to fine grinding
Calcined aluminum oxide
sharper and longer-lasting than standard aluminum oxide, suited to an upgrade tier
Zirconia
for grinding stainless steel, alloy steel and carbon steel; under pressure the grain fractures to expose new cutting edges
Silicon carbide
surface work on non-metals such as stone and glass
Ceramic
heat resistant and long-lasting. Rex rates its life at about 3–4 times that of standard flap discs (in suitable applications). It needs enough pressure to stay self-sharpening
Choosing Flap Discs by Workpiece
| Workpiece | Recommended Grain | Recommended Shape | Common Grits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Carbon steel | Zirconia, aluminum oxide | T29 for weld removal, T27 for blending | P40–P80 |
| Stainless steel | Zirconia, ceramic | T27 | P60–P120 |
| Aluminum and other non-ferrous metals | Aluminum oxide | T27 | P60–P120 |
| Wood | Aluminum oxide | T27 | P60–P120 |
| Stone, glass | Silicon carbide | T27 | Chosen by process step |
Flap Discs vs. Grinding Wheels vs. Mounted Flap Wheels
Flap discs
- abrasive cloth flaps stacked on a backing plate. Stock removal and blending are done in one step, with a smoother finish, less heat and less noise. Used on an angle grinder
Grinding wheels
- abrasive pressed into a solid body (bonded abrasive). They remove stock fast but leave a rough surface, so an extra blending step is needed
How Flap Discs Are Made

01. Cloth slitting
consistent flap width, no frayed edges

02. Gluing
controls glue amount and coverage, which decides whether flaps come loose

03. Flap stacking
controls flap count, angle and evenness, which decide cutting power, life and balance

04. Pressing
presses the flaps flat and tight to reduce vibration and uneven wear

05. Drying and curing
secures bond strength so flaps stay on under heat at high speed

06. Packing
labeling and speed marking, in bulk or retail packaging
Speed and Safety Marking
- 100 mm: 15,300 rpm
- 115 mm: 13,300 rpm
- 125 mm: 12,250 rpm
- 150 mm: 10,200 rpm
- 180 mm: 8,500 rpm
