Sanding Mesh Discs vs. Standard Hook and Loop Sanding Discs
| Mesh Discs | Standard Hook and Loop Discs | |
|---|---|---|
| Dust extraction | Through the entire disc face | Only through a few fixed holes |
| Hole alignment | No alignment needed | Must align with backing pad holes |
| Clogging and disc changes | Resists clogging, fewer changes | Clogs easily in dusty work |
| Secondary scratches | Fewer, dust is removed right away | Leftover dust causes scratches |
| Reliance on dust extraction equipment | High | Low |
| Price per disc | Higher | Lower |
When Mesh Discs Are Worth It,
and When They Are Not
Worth using:
- Sanding body filler and primer in automotive refinishing
- Wood and furniture sanding
- Drywall and wall sanding
- Workplaces with dust control requirements
Not worth using:
- Heavy metal stock removal: standard hook and loop discs or fiber discs cut faster
- No dust extraction: the advantage of mesh discs comes mainly from dust extraction, so without a vacuum the benefit is limited
3 Abrasives
Aluminum oxide
General use on wood and carbon steel
Silicon carbide
Stone, glass, non-ferrous metals and painted surfaces
Ceramic
Hard-to-grind metals and heavy loads, with a lower grinding temperature
Requirement: Dust Extraction
- The sander must be connected to a vacuum or have built-in dust extraction
- Use a hook and loop backing pad; mesh discs attach directly to it
- If suction is weak, the mesh can still clog
